With E3 2019 behind us and the summer beginning, it is time to start looking forward to 2020! Every year after E3,
we put together a mega list of our most anticipated upcoming games for
the next year. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the 48 most anticipated
upcoming games of 2020.
With a new PlayStation and Xbox slated to
come out in late 2020, next year is undeniably going to be an exciting
year in gaming. There will be plenty of new games releasing on the
current generation of consoles, but also tons of awesome titles
releasing on the next generation consoles that we really don’t know that
much about yet!
E3 always brings tons of release date
announcements, so we couldn’t think of a better time to put together
this list. We will continue to update the list as new titles are
announced and release dates are set (or pushed back). So, let’s get
started!
Discover our 50 most anticipated upcoming games of 2020 below, and let us know which you’re looking forward to most in the comments.
1 Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Developer: Moon Studios Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release Date: February 11, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PC Genre: Action-Adventure/Platformer
Announced at E3 2017, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is one of the most anticipated games of the beginning of 2020. It serves as a direct sequel to the 2015 hit Ori and the Blind Forest
and will be coming to Xbox One and PC on February 11, 2020. The game
features new movement abilities, a sequential upgrade system, and
autosaves, which has been requested by fans. Let’s not forget about the
incredibly well-done visuals and likely heart-wrenching story that we’re
expecting to see. Hopefully, Ori and the Will of the Wisps will live up
to the hype! Check out the trailer here.
2 Gods and Monsters
Developer: Ubisoft Publisher: Ubisoft Release Date: February 25, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch, Stadia Genre: Action/Adventure Gods and Monsters is a new Ubisoft title that is being developed by the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey team. The game gives off a Breath of the Wild
feel with its art style, which has lots of fans excited. During the E3
2019 Ubisoft conference, the publisher revealed the new game and dished
out a February 25, 2020 release date.
In Gods and Monsters,
players will be able to encompass the power of the gods to help save
them from one of the most deadly creatures in Greek mythology. The gods
have given players some awesome powers to help them defeat their enemy,
Typhon. Since the game was just recently announced at the time of
writing this, there is still a lot that is unknown about the game, but
hopefully, we will learn more soon.
Essentially, it’s going to be like a AAA, big-budget Breath of the Wild — and that’s definitely something we can get excited about. Check out the trailer here.
3Final Fantasy VII Remake
Developer: Square Enix Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: March 3, 2020 Platform: PlayStation 4 Genre: RPG
Paying homage to the original Final Fantasy VII, which released back in 1997, the Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to release on March 3, 2020. Fans have been clamoring for a remake of this beloved Final Fantasy game for years, and now the finish line is finally in sight – at least, so we thought before reading Kotaku’s hands-on impressions. See the trailer here.
4 Watch Dogs Legion
Developer: Ubisoft Publisher: Ubisoft Release Date: March 6, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Stadia Genre: Action-Adventure
Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements from E3 2019, to our surprise, was Watch Dogs Legion,
which was officially unveiled during the Ubisoft press conference after
being leaked the week before by a well-known retailer. Watch Dogs
Legion will take place in a post-Brexit London. The game will follow a
London based hacker group, known as DedSec, as they try to fight the new
London authority. This will be the third installment to the Watch Dogs
series and is set to release on March 6, 2020, and if you weren’t
previously interested in the Watch Dogs franchise before, we have a strong feeling that Legion is going to be the game that does it for you. See the trailer here.
5 Animal Crossing New Horizons
Developer: Nintendo Publisher: Nintendo Release Date: March 20, 2020 Platform: Switch Genre: Simulation
Animal Crossing fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer than expected to get their hands on the upcoming Animal Crossing New Horizons
title after it was delayed from a 2019 release to 2020. During the E3
Nintendo Direct, Doug Bowser announced that the game would not be
finished by the anticipated 2019 release date
and would have to be pushed to March 20, 2020. This is the first Animal
Crossing title to be released for the Switch and obviously has fans
quite excited. See the trailer here.
6 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
Developer: Hardsuit Labs Publisher: Paradox Interactive Release Date: March 31, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/RPG
Based on the popular tabletop game, Vampire: The Masquerade, Bloodlines 2
is set in a setting known as the World of Darkness. The game will
follow the story of a human from Seattle, who wakes up as a vampire
after being killed. Upon realizing they are now a vampire, players must
upgrade their powers and join one of the five blood clans. You can find
out which clan you want to join when Bloodlines 2 releases on March 31,
2020. Read more about Bloodlines 2 here. See the trailer here.
7 Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated
Developer: Purple Lamp Studios Publisher: THQ Nordic Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Action-Adventure/Platformer
Originally
released back in 2003, everyone’s favorite yellow sponge is getting
rehydrated and heading to the current generation of consoles! Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
is considered a cult classic by many, and features Spongebob and his
friends as they try to collect spatulas and save Bikini Bottom. Utterly
ridiculous – but in a good way!
Being dubbed “rehydrated” instead
of remade, Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom will have a
new multiplayer mode as well as cut content from the original game. This
upcoming remake definitely has fans very excited to help save Bikini
Bottom! See the trailer here.
8 System Shock
Developer: Night Dive Studios Publisher: Night Dive Studios Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/RPG
Serving as a remake of the 1994 game, System Shock
is an upcoming remake that is set to release in Q1 2020. After being in
development for a while, System Shock was put on hold in February 2018
while Nightdive reassesses its directions and goals. The development has
since picked back up and will hopefully go smoothly until release.
In
System Shock, players will play as a renowned hacker who is considered
by many to be the best in the business. However, after a hack goes
wrong, you find yourself indebted to a greedy executive. A few months
later, after waking up from a coma, the world around you has changed and
feels abandoned, even though it isn’t.
9 Hindsight 20/20
Developer: Triple-I Games Publisher: Triple-I Games Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Action/Adventure
Everyone
wishes they had 20/20 vision right? Well, in Hindsight 20/20, you can!
In Hindsight 20/20, players will be able to go back and change choices
that they made during their original playthrough, and experience
different outcomes. Every decision that you make will have an outcome,
if you don’t like it, just change it! Hindsight 20/20 will be releasing
in Q1 2020. Watch the trailer here.
10 Rainbow Six Quarantine
Developer: Ubisoft Publisher: Ubisoft Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action-Adventure/FPS
Set
several years in the future of the Rainbow Six world, Rainbow Six
Quarantine was officially announced at the Ubisoft E3 2019 conference
and is set to release sometime in Q1 2020.
In Rainbow Six
Quarantine, Rainbow Operators are tasked with finding and eliminating
alien parasites that are putting the human race at risk. Quarantine is
not going to be PvP like other games in the series, but instead, it will
be a 3 player co-op adventure that players can take with their friends
or strangers. Watch the trailer here.
11 Trials of Mana
Developer: Square Enix Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Action RPG
Announced
during the Nintendo E3 2019 conference, Nintendo revealed that Trials
of Mana a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake is set to release in Q1 2020. The
Trials of Mana remake is the third game in the Mana series, which never
made it out of Japan.
The story will follow different characters,
who are all involved in an intertwining narrative. Unfortunately, fans
will have to wait a little bit to get their hands on the SNES remake.
Hopefully an official release date will be announced soon, but for now,
we can rest easy knowing that it is coming early 2020. Watch the trailer here.
12 The Last of Us Part II
Developer: Naughty Dog Publisher: Sony Release Date: Q1 2020 Platform: PlayStation 4 Genre: Action-Adventure/Horror/Survival The Last of Us Part II
was announced during a PlayStation event in December 2016 and is set to
release sometime in Q1 2020. Serving as a sequel to the popular 2013
PlayStation exclusive – which, by the way, is on our list of the best zombie games of all-time
– the game will take place 5 years after the events of its predecessor
and follow the story of an older version of the main character, Ellie
(which we now know is the only playable character this time around).
The
Last of Us was one of the most beloved PlayStation exclusives of the
PlayStation 4 generation, so there is no denying the hype levels for the
upcoming sequel. Fans haven’t heard much about the game since the very
strange Sony E3 2018 conference. With Sony skipping out on E3 2019, it
seems that some news about The Last of Us 2 should be just around the
corner, hopefully in the form of an official release date! Watch the brutal trailer here.
13 Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
Developer: CyberConnect2 Publisher: Bandai Namco Release Date: Early 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: RPG
Formerly
known as Dragon Ball ProjectZ, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was officially
announced at E3 2019 and is set to release sometime early 2020.
Currently, there really isn’t anything known about this game except that
is coming out in 2020 and Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the gang will
be there for the adventure. Watch the trailer here.
14 Empire of Sin
Developer: Romero Games Publisher: Paradox Interactive Release Date: Spring 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Strategy
Empire
of Sin is a strategy game that is set in the 1920s and is set to
release in spring 2020. Taking place in the prohibition days of Chicago,
players must hustle to earn their way to the top. As you rise in the
ranks, others will constantly be gunning for your spot, so it’s up to
you to defend what you have earned. Empire of Sin will allow players to
defend and expand their territory, wield their influence, and strategize
to stay on top. Watch the trailer here.
15 Tactical Galactical
Developer: Capsulated Software Publisher: Capsulated Software Release Date: April 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Strategy
Tactical
Galactical is set far away in a galaxy much different than ours. In
this real-time hex-based strategy game, players must think through each
move carefully as they fight for control. There are three characters in
the game that are all fighting to become the master of the cosmos, will
you be the one? Tactical Galactical is set to release in April 2020. Watch the trailer here.
16 Cyberpunk 2077
Developer: CD Projekt RED Publisher: CD Projekt RED Release Date: April 16, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action-Adventure\RPG
Cyberpunk
2077 is arguably one of, if not the most anticipated games of 2020.
Based on a tabletop game, Cyberpunk 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 features an
open world with six different regions. Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to
release on April 16, 2020.
The game follows a character known as V
and is based in Night City, California. With unruly businesses and
gangs fighting for control of Night City, the city is now rampant with
homelessness, robots, and overbearing laws. Aside from this, not much is
known about the game, but as the April release date gets closer, we
will undoubtedly learn more. Watch the 48 minutes of gameplay here.
17 Marvel’s Avengers
Developer: Crystal Dynamics Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: May 15, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Stadia Genre: Action/Adventure
For
months, rumors have been swirling around about a new Avengers game. At
E3 2019, Square Enix took to the stage to unveil the first ever trailer
and release date for its new game, Marvel’s Avengers, which will be
releasing on May 15, 2020.
Marvel’s Avengers will begin at the
events of A-Day, the unveiling of the new Avengers HQ in San Francisco.
However, after a quick turn of events which results in the death of
civilians, the Avengers officially disband. Fast forward five years
later, and all superheroes are now outlawed. However, a recent world
event puts humanity at risk, and the only hope is to reassemble the
Avengers. Watch the A-Day trailer here.
18 Carrion
Developer: Phobia Publisher: Devolver Digital Release Date: June 1, 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Action/Adventure/Horror/Platform
Carrion
is not your everyday horror game and sounds like a lot of fun. In
Carrion, players will play as a monster who will stalk and consume its
enemies. Your goal is to spread panic and destroy the prison that is
holding you captive. Throughout the game, players will learn of new
abilities that will allow them to cause even more destruction. Carrion
will be sneaking its way to release on June 1, 2020. Watch the reveal trailer here.
19 Dying Light 2
Developer: Techland Publisher: Techland Release Date: Q2 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action-Adventure/FPS
Serving
as a sequel to the 2015 game, Dying Light, Dying Light 2 is set to
release in Q2 2020. Originally announced at E3 2018, the sequel will
follow the story of a protagonist named Aiden Caldwell.
Throughout
the game, players will have to make a series of choices, each which
have unforeseen consequences. Like it’s predecessor, Dying Light 2 will
have parkour and other similar gameplay mechanics. The release of Dying
Light 2 is still around a year away at the time this article was
written, so I can’t imagine an official release date will be announced
for a few more months.
However, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about this sequel. For one, the map size is 4x larger than the original game’s map; that means more areas to explore and more people to meet. Secondly, Techland promises to support Dying Light 2 for years, even after the next generation of consoles begin.

20 Minecraft Dungeons
Developer: Mojang Publisher: Mojang Release Date: Q2 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: Action/Adventure
Minecraft
Dungeons is a bit different than your traditional Minecraft title, as
there is no building, crushing, or crafting. Instead, the game will
feature dungeon crawling, with dungeons filled full of traps, monsters,
puzzles, and treasures.
Minecraft Dungeons was announced in
September 2018 and got an official release window during E3 2019. This
is one of many spin off games from the Minecraft series. However, it is
in a league of its own as Minecraft is concerned, since it is a dungeon
crawler. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait for Q2 2020 to find out
just how different Minecraft Dungeons will be! Watch the gameplay reveal trailer here.
21 Wasteland 3
Developer: inExile Entertainment Publisher: Deep Silver Release Date: Q2 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: RPG/Strategy
Starting
as a crowdfunded game, Wasteland 3 was announced in 2016. It is a
squad-based RPG that is set to release in Q2 2020. Wasteland 3 will
follow the story of the only surviving member of a group called Team
November.
This turn-based combat game is set in an apocalyptic version of Colorado. Those who backed the game
during its crowdfunding phase will be able to get their hands on it a
little bit early. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to wait until
Q2 2020 to play. Watch the E3 trailer here.
22 Phantasy Star Online 2
Developer: Online R&D Publisher: SEGA Release Date: Q2 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch Genre: MMO/RPG
Initially
released in Japan around eight years ago, Phantasy Star Online 2 is
heading West sometime in Q2 2020. Phantasy Star Online 2 is an MMO/RPG
where players can explore the world with their friends or by themselves.
Fighting battles, collecting photons, and leveling up are just a few of
the things that players will be able to do in Phantasy Star Online 2.
A
bit of confusion left fans thinking that Phantasy Star Online 2 would
be an Xbox exclusive. However, at E3 2019, it was confirmed that
Phantasy Star Online 2 would, in fact, be coming to all current
generation platforms. While we don’t exactly when, we can expect
Phantasy Star Online 2 to release around this time next year. Watch the E3 reveal trailer here.
23 Outriders
Developer: People Can Fly Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: Early Q3 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/Shooter
Announced at E3 2019 during the E3 2019 Square Enix conference,
Outriders is an upcoming co-op shooter. Since it is newly announced,
there isn’t a lot known about it at this time. Square Enix did share a
release window, but it is pretty far out and likely subject to change.
However, for now, we can expect Outriders to release sometime in Q3
2020.
Outriders is a co-op shooter that is built to be played in a
group up to three. It is a dark, sci-fi adventure, and features an
alien life form. Currently, this is really all that is known about the
upcoming People Can Fly game. However, the coming months will definitely
reveal more information about Outriders. Watch the announcement trailer here.
24 Call of Duty: Black Ops 5
Developer: Treyarch Studios Publisher: Activision Release Date: Q4 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/FPS
There’s
a little bit of craziness surrounding the annual Call of Duty game,
after Activision pulled Raven and Sledgehammer Studios off of the Call
of Duty: Black Ops 5 development and handed it over to Treyarch Studios.
An official release date hasn’t been given for Call of Duty: Black Ops 5
yet, but it is safe to assume that it will likely be coming in either
October or November of 2020 (based on previous years).
Call of
Duty: Black Ops 5 will be the fifth installment to the Black Ops series,
which began in 2010. The first game was originally developed by
Treyarch, as was the most recent game in the series, Black Ops 4.
Activision typically gives the Call of Duty developers a three-year
rotation between games, but it seems that Treyarch is being asked to
step up a year early.
25 Monstrum 2
Developer: Team Junkfish Publisher: Team Junkfish Release Date: Q4 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/Adventure/Horror/Strategy
Everyone
loves to play hide and go seek, right? Well, that’s pretty much what
Monstrum 2 is, except with a little bit of horror sprinkled in! Monstrum
2 is a 4v1 adventure horror game where players are split into teams of 4
and must hide from a vicious monster. Players must work together to
escape the monster before it finds them first.
Monstrum 2 will
take place in a sea fortress, which will have a changing environment
from game to game. Players must find the different escape routes and
learn the map inside in out before they get devoured. Additionally, one
way that Monstrum 2 will be different from its predecessor is that each
round, a player will get to play as the monster. Monstrum 2 is set to
release at the very end of 2020.
26 Halo Infinite
Developer: 343 Industries Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release Date: Q4 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PC Genre: Action/FPS
The
Halo series is making a grand return with the upcoming Halo Infinite,
which is currently slated for Q4 2020. This will be the sixth main entry
into the Halo series and the first main Halo game since 2017.
Additionally, it will likely be a launch title for the next generation
Xbox console. Although, it will also be released on the Xbox One.
Halo
Infinite will continue the story of Master Chief and will follow the
events of Halo 5 Guardians. A lot of Halo fans were disappointed that
Halo 5 didn’t focus on the Master Chief story very much, so developers
have made sure to give fans what they want in Halo Infinite.
Unfortunately, this is really all we know about it at the moment, but
more information will come to light as we get closer to the end of 2020. Watch the trailer here.
27 Destroy All Humans! Remake
Developer: Pandemic Studios Publisher: THQ Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/Adventure
The cult classic Destroy All Humans
is getting a much-deserved remake in 2020, and we’re pretty stoked
about it. THQ Nordic announced the remake just before E3 2019, exciting
fans of the series.
The Destroy All Humans remake will be working
with the original voice actors to bring back the witty humor of the
original game. In the remake, players will be able to combine their
psychokinetic powers with their alien weapons to cause some major havoc.
Unfortunately, players have to wait until 2020 to do it.
Now, if you’re one of those who aren’t big on remakes, you might want to check out the original Destroy All Humans on PSN right now and then get back to us – while the core gameplay holds up, nothing else does. Watch the trailer here.
28 Psychonauts 2
Developer: Double Fine Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/Adventure
Announced way back at the 2015 Game Awards, Psychonauts 2 is finally set to release in 2020. It has been a long time coming, but good things come to those who wait, right?
Psychonauts
2 is a sequel to the beloved platformer, Psychonauts. In Psychonauts 2,
players will control Raz, a new graduate with powerful psychic powers.
Players will use their powers to explore the world with traditional and
new platforming elements. Watch the first gameplay trailer here.

Lego
Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a newly announced game from E3 2019
that will be releasing in 2020. The new Star Wars game is a combination
of all nine core Star Wars movies.
Lego
Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is not merely a remake of an old game,
but a completely new game that merely tells the Skywalker stories from
the movies. This means that the game will be filled with a bunch of
small stories that will make up the whole game. Watch the reveal trailer here.

33 Dragon Age 4
Developer: BioWare Publisher: Electronic Arts Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: RPG
Despite
being rumored to be in development for many years, Dragon Age 4 was
finally revealed at the Game Awards in 2018. While it isn’t technically
confirmed that Dragon Age 4 will be coming in 2020, it seems that with
this generation coming to a close and the next generation kicking off in
2020, Dragon Age 4 will likely be released in 2020. So far, there
hasn’t been very much information shared about Dragon Age 4, so it’s
hard to say too much more about it. For now, we will just have to sit
back, wait, and see what happens.
The development of Dragon Age 4 has, ultimately, been a hot mess, but if you want to read up on the latest regarding the upcoming RPG, check out Techradar’s info dump.
34 Beyond Good & Evil 2
Developer: Ubisoft Publisher: Ubisoft Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: Action/Adventure
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is an upcoming prequel to Beyond Good & Evil that has been in the works
for many years and is, hopefully, set to release in 2020. While there
is not an official release date yet, there is a beta period planned for
late 2019, which leads most fans to think that it will be releasing in
2020. It is set in an open world and will take place one generation
prior to the events of Beyond Good & Evil.
Players will start
the game at the bottom of the social system and must complete various
tasks to rise up the ranks. Players can visit different planets,
complete tasks, gain technology, and improve their status. There is
still a lot unknown about the game, but hopefully, the upcoming beta
will help answer some of our questions.
While 2020 is admittedly optimistic, we’re thinking it’s likely to drop in Q4 2020. Watch the latest trailer here.
35 Elden Ring
Developer: FromSoftware Publisher: Bandai Namco Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC Genre: RPG

in development since late 2016. It is a third-person RPG that seems to

all we really know about it at the moment, but hopefully, in the coming

that players can visit like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Eifel Tower, and
a whole lot more. Players will need to monitor weather patterns to make
