Tom Brady retiring after 22 seasons, seven Super Bowl wins with New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Image
Tom Brady is retiring from football after 22 seasons in which he won a historic seven Super Bowl titles, sources told ESPN on Saturday. When Brady, widely considered the greatest quarterback in NFL history, left the field after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend, he knew it was likely his final act as a football player, sources said. In the days since, he has spent time digesting that mindset and is preparing his retirement announcement along with the next chapter of his life and career, sources said. Sources said that Brady's decision to retire is based on several factors, including family and health. Although it's less significant, Brady also recognizes that the Buccaneers are likely to undergo significant roster turnover, sources said. Brady, 44, has been adamant for weeks that he never wanted a "farewell season," and many who know him believed he desired a decision made without much drama leading up to it. He will shift hi...

Washington Wizards' Russell Westbrook says fan behavior out of hand, calls on NBA to protect players better

Image
A fan attending Wednesday night's NBA playoff game in Philadelphia dumped popcorn on Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook as he left the court after injuring his right ankle, infuriating Westbrook and eliciting outrage from fellow players. Westbrook had to be held back by multiple Wizards staffers and arena security guards as he limped down the tunnel after rolling the ankle with 10 minutes to play in the Philadelphia 76ers' 120-95 Game 2 victory. The fan was ejected by security moments later. "To be completely honest, this s--- is getting out of hand, especially for me. The amount of disrespect, the amount of fans just doing whatever the f--- they want to do -- it's just out of pocket," Westbrook said. "There are certain things that cross the line. Any other setting ... a guy were to come up on the street and pour popcorn on my head, you know what happens. "In these arenas, you got to start protecting the players. We'll see what the NBA doe...

NFL’s Washington franchise officially has a new name coming

Image
The league had asked teams to begin scrubbing “Redskins” from their platforms over the weekend in anticipation of the change that ultimately came on Monday . No new name has been announced yet, as the team is trying to settle a trademark dispute. The move completes a swift about-face from Washington owner Dan Snyder , who previously vowed that the nickname would continue on as it has since 1933, when it was created by former owner George Preston Marshall. This despite the name coming under increased scrutiny in recent years as being racist and demeaning toward Native Americans. Those grievances have been longstanding, but gained significant momentum over the last month as the death of George Floyd sparked nationwide protests over racial inequality in the country. The turning point appeared to come on July 2, when it was revealed that a group of investment firms in multibillion dollar corporations such as FedEx, Nike, PepsiCo and others had joined together to ask the c...

NBA 2019-2020 SEASON- RETURNS July 31, 2020

Image
The NBA season is tentatively set to restart on July 31. The 2019-20 NBA season went on hiatus on March 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic .  On June 4, the NBA's  Board of Governors approved a competitive format to restart the 2019-20 season with 22 teams returning to play and a tentative start date of July 31. The Board’s approval is the first formal step among many required to resume the season and the NBA is working to finalize a comprehensive season restart plan with the National Basketball Players Association. The 2019-20 restart is contingent on an agreement with The Walt Disney Company to use Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla., as a single site for a campus for all games, practices and housing for the remainder of the season. In anticipation of the return of the NBA, here are some common questions and answers about the restart of the 2019-20 season. Again, it's important to note that all of these...

NBA PRE-GAME TUNNEL FASHION SHOW

Image
"The return of the NBA means the return of the pre-game tunnel fashion show"  The runway. The tunnel entrance. The arrival shot. Popularized by NBA stars such as Wade, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, the arena walk-in is now a staple of live broadcasts across all pro sports leagues—not to mention constant fodder for social media sartorialists from Miami to Milan. You know the scene: Dapper athletes strut through a cavernous hallway, headphones on and eyes up en route to the locker room as camera flashes flicker and news crews hustle to keep pace.

Conor McGregor accepts a 'super-fight' challenge against Anderson Silva, a record-breaking UFC champion

Image
Conor McGregor has accepted a "super-fight" challenge against Anderson Silva, a record-breaking former UFC middleweight champion. The prospective fight arrives days after McGregor, a comfortable lightweight, caused uproar on social media after saying he was tied as "the No.1 MMA goat" — short for "greatest of all time." McGregor ranked Jon Jones as No.4, Georges St. Pierre as third, then placed himself alongside Silva, sparking great debate amongst his 8.1 million followers on Twitter. It wasn't long before Silva saw the post, and challenged McGregor to a "super-fight" to be contested at 176.37-pounds, which is between the welterweight and middleweight limit. "I have immense admiration for the great athlete that Conor is and I believe that a super-fight would go down in the history of the sport," Silva said Wednesday on Instagram . "Neither of us need to prove anything to anyone," he added. "I bel...

Jerry Sloan remembered by fellow coaches Don Nelson, Phil Jackson, Lenny Wilkens

Image
Don Nelson, the winningest coach in NBA history, had just finished a stroll on the beach in his beloved Hawai'i on Friday when a reporter informed him that his coaching contemporary Jerry Sloan had died from complications of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia at age 78. "Oh, he was a dear friend,'' Nelson told ESPN. "Even if he did fight me the first time we ever met.'' Nelson was a player with the Boston Celtics when the team traveled for a game against Sloan's Chicago Bulls at Chicago Stadium on Nov. 8, 1966. Nelson was bombing back on defense, trying to catch a streaking Sloan, when Sloan stopped suddenly, causing the two players to collide violently. "He set me up,'' Nellie recalled with a laugh. "He knew I had no choice but to run over him. And then, even though he got the call, he got up and tried to hit me.'' Nelson said he and Sloan each took a couple of wild swings at each other that ...

Mike Tyson Says Holyfield Rematch for Charity 'Would Be Awesome'

Image
Most of us never thought we'd see Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield back in the ring together after the former chomped on the ear of the latter in 1997, but Tyson says he'd be up for another rematch if it was for a good cause. Lately, Tyson has been teasing a potential return to the boxing ring by posting videos of his intense training regimen on social media. "I'm back!" the man called Iron Mike states in one video, and truth be told, he's looking pretty impressive. While no professional fights have yet been arranged, Tyson has also said he's looking to box for special events to help raise money for charity. Oddly enough, Evander Holyfield doesn't seem too impressed with Tyson's plans to step out of retirement, as he has also been training for a potential comeback of his own. Hours after posting one of his training videos, Holyfield posted some clips to show he's still got it as well. Like Tyson, Holyfield has also spoken ...
